Every car spec difference in Assetto Corsa EVO and why they matter

Shop sim racing equipment

Currently, early access driving simulation Assetto Corsa EVO has a roster consisting of 20 road and race cars.

Seems rather straightforward on paper, but the details are more intricate than first meets the eye.

When developer Kunos Simulazioni recreated each car, it also added in different real-world specification variants. I’m not talking about personalisation or customisation, but OE option packages.

Now, how these will function later in early access, or when version 1.0 is hard to say presently. As it stands, each different model of each car has the same performance indicator (PI) rating – which we think could, and should, change.

Then there’s in-game pricing, which isn’t visible yet due to a bug.

But, there’s no doubt that selecting the spec does matter. For example, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is less sharp in response than the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Extreme Track Performance 1LE with Matte Hood, Carbon Insert, Center Stripe.

Some cars also come with different gearboxes. Rather obviously, the Mazda MX-5 ND Cup race car can be driven with either a manual or sequential gearbox – and the matching ratio selecter is modelled on-track. The manual sees your avatar use a h-pattern shifter, while with the sequential they pull back to go up a gear and push forward to do down a cog.

Assetto Corsa EVO Lotus Emira options
‘Sport’ and ‘Touring’ models of the Lotus Emira drive differently to each other

More nerdy, however, is the Lotus Emira. Four varieties are available. Two options are simply visual: the singe-colour body does what it says on the tin, while the Black Pack adds black wheels, mirror caps and roof.

It’s the next two words that are important: Touring and Sports.

Drive Norfolk’s finest in Touring guise, and it is fitted with a manual gearbox and softer suspension. Sports adds firmer suspension, resulting in less understeer, and also the automatic, paddle-operated, gearbox.

Another example is the Hyundai i30 N. The base hatchback is a manual, the Drive-N Limited Edition is an automatic.

If you’d like anti-locking brakes on the Porsche 911 Cup race car, then select the model with it fitted.

The two Toyota GR86 sportscars with the Performance Package visibility sit lower to the ground than those without.

And so it goes on – noting that most different options are simply appearance-based. Such as the different paint schemes on the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm, the carbon pack on the Audi RS 3 or the dual-tone leather optioned Honda S2000.

It’s a form of spec nerdery unseen to date in sim racing, and paired with customisation options (which we are still waiting to be unlocked) and tuning (set for fall 2025) it looks like the car obsessives at Traxion will be spending hours in EVO before they even hit the track…
